“Oppenheimer” emerged as a major triumph at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, this award season favorite led the pack with 13 nominations and secured seven wins, including Best Director, Leading Actor, and the coveted Best Film accolade.
In his first-ever BAFTA win, Nolan expressed gratitude to Universal Studios for their support in tackling a dark project during his acceptance speech.
Another standout at the ceremony was “Poor Things,” which clinched five victories, including Emma Stone’s win for Leading Actress.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, from “The Holdovers,” continued her domination in the Supporting Actress category, thanking her co-star Paul Giamatti during her acceptance speech.
“The Zone of Interest,” a gripping Holocaust drama by director Jonathan Glazer, earned recognition as the Outstanding British Film and also won the Best Film Not in the English Language category. However, films like “Saltburn,” “Maestro,” “Barbie,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” left empty-handed.
The ceremony saw appearances from cinematic legends like Tom Cruise (via video link) and Michael J. Fox, who presented the Best Film category. Prince William also attended the event on public duty, given the hospitalization of Catherine, Princess of Wales, and the cancer diagnosis of his father, King Charles.
Following the BAFTAs, the Screen Actors Guild Awards (to air on Netflix on February 24) will be the next major awards event before the Oscars on March 10.
The BAFTA ceremony was not broadcast live but was aired on BBC One in the UK and is available for streaming on BBC iPlayer and BritBox.
