'Spaceman' and the Trappings of Sci-Fi Space Movies

Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix venture, ‘Spaceman,’ finds itself adrift in the vast expanse of sci-fi space movies, struggling to reach the celestial heights it aspires to. As we delve into the film’s shortcomings, we’re reminded of a recurring pattern in the genre’s history. In ‘Spaceman,’ Sandler portrays Jakub, a Czech cosmonaut grappling with solitude aboard […]

In a departure from the norm, the final issue of British Vogue under the editorship of Edward Enninful doesn’t feature just one superstar on the cover, but a stunning ensemble of 40. Enninful, the Ghanaian-born fashion editor who unexpectedly stepped down in June after over six years in charge, orchestrated a momentous cover featuring an array of supermodels, Hollywood icons, pop sensations, and fashion luminaries with whom he collaborated. Among them are Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Miley Cyrus, Linda Evangelista, Jane Fonda, Dua Lipa, Kate Moss, and Serena Williams. Photographed in Manhattan by Steven Meisel (for the cover) and Ned Rogers (for the inside pages), the 40 women gathered from across the globe, including London, Paris, Milan, Los Angeles, and beyond, to be part of this historic issue, as noted by Enninful in his final editor’s letter. “When it came to my last issue, I knew the cover would be dedicated to women. Of course! Women have shaped British Vogue for close to 108 years now, and have certainly informed every moment of my six-and-a-half-year tenure here, to say nothing of leading and guiding me through my entire life,” Enninful wrote. “It was clear to all of us on the team that no one woman could or should encapsulate these past few years for the magazine,” he added. “What we needed was a group, to lean into the power of the collective to bring to life what I hope has been a daring, disruptive and evolutionary period in Vogue’s history.” Enninful’s departure last year surprised the fashion world, given his significant influence on the industry through his roles at i-D, W, and American Vogue. At British Vogue, he spearheaded a movement toward diversity and inclusion, marking a new chapter for the publication. During his tenure, Enninful achieved several groundbreaking milestones, including hiring Black photographers like Misan Harriman and Kennedi Carter for cover stories in 2020, as well as featuring disabled activists, models, and creatives on five covers for the May 2023 issue. Moreover, he challenged ageist norms by dedicating a 2019 issue to women over 50, with Jane Fonda gracing the cover. His commitment to celebrating women of all ages is evident in the final issue, which features 55-year-old Christy Turlington among the 40 cover stars. As Enninful transitions to an advisory role at Vogue’s publisher Condé Nast, Chioma Nnadi, former digital editor of American Vogue, takes the reins at British Vogue, becoming the first Black woman appointed to the role. Enninful remains determined to advocate for diverse voices in fashion and media, ensuring that the momentum of recent years continues unabated.
