Review of the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline: Assessing Your Team’s Decisions

As we reflect on the 2024 NBA trade deadline, held just after the All-Star Game, it’s time to evaluate whether your favorite team made the right moves to bolster their roster. With a few weeks now passed since the deadline, we have gained enough perspective and data to analyze each team’s decisions.

Did the Milwaukee Bucks effectively address their needs? Did the Dallas Mavericks overextend themselves? Should the Los Angeles Lakers have been more proactive?

We’ve categorized all 30 teams into three groups:

1. Winners: Teams that made the right moves and improved.
2. Losers: Teams that made incorrect decisions.
3. TBD: It’s still too early to determine the outcome.

Let’s dive into the assessments:

Winners:

New York Knicks: The Knicks made early moves to enhance their offense and defense, acquiring OG Anunoby and Precious Achiuwa. Subsequent additions of Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks bolstered their bench without sacrificing future draft picks.

Boston Celtics: Despite their strong roster, the Celtics made strategic additions in Xavier Tillman and Jaden Springer to fortify their depth, particularly in defense.

Toronto Raptors: By building around Scottie Barnes and acquiring young talents like RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, the Raptors set a clear direction for their future while gaining valuable draft assets.

LA Clippers: The Clippers’ earlier acquisition of James Harden solidified their status as contenders, and they wisely focused on team cohesion rather than additional trades.

Charlotte Hornets: Charlotte’s post-deadline performance, coupled with their acquisitions of talent and assets, suggests a potential turning point for the team.

And several other teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, and Denver Nuggets, made moves that either addressed critical needs or positioned them well for the future.

Losers:

Chicago Bulls: Despite opportunities to improve, the Bulls remained stagnant, failing to address weaknesses in their roster and missing out on potential trade assets.
