Sean McDermott Remains Undecided on Bills' Defensive Play-Caller

As the Buffalo Bills gear up for the 2024 season with a new defensive coordinator, the question of who will handle the defensive play-calling remains unanswered. Head coach Sean McDermott took over the defensive play-calling duties last season after Leslie Frazier’s departure, leading the Bills to another successful defensive campaign. Despite promoting linebackers coach Bobby Babich to defensive coordinator in January, McDermott has yet to decide whether to relinquish play-calling duties to him.

“We’ll talk about it,” McDermott stated during the NFL Scouting Combine. “We’ll make that decision when we need to. Right now, we’re just taking it one step at a time.”

Bobby Babich, a seasoned coach who has been with the Bills since 2017, has earned praise from McDermott for his multi-dimensional understanding of the game. While McDermott acknowledges Babich’s qualifications, he remains deliberate in his decision-making process.

Regardless of who ultimately assumes the play-calling responsibilities, McDermott emphasizes the continuity and synergy between himself and Babich, having worked together for seven seasons. However, potential changes may occur in the secondary, particularly with the uncertainty surrounding pending free agent Micah Hyde.

McDermott spoke highly of Hyde’s impact on the team and the community, expressing his desire to retain the veteran safety. The status of Jordan Poyer, another key figure in Buffalo’s defense, remains solidified in McDermott’s plans for the upcoming season.

With changes looming on the defensive front, the Bills’ offense stands to benefit from the continuity provided by offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who now has a full offseason to implement his strategies. McDermott praised both Brady and Babich for their fiery personalities and their ability to instill energy and passion in their respective units.

As the Bills navigate these transitions, McDermott emphasizes the importance of maintaining a competitive edge to fend off their AFC East rivals and make a deeper playoff run in the upcoming season.
